Cardiology

Cardiologyis the branch of medicine that studies the heart and its affections. Diagnosis in cardiology is determined by the physician’s examination of the patient and conducting laboratory tests and cardiac functional explorations – electrocardiogram (EKG), exercise test, ambulatory blood pressure (TA) monitoring, oscillometry and specific paraclinical examinations – cardio-pulmonary X-ray, echocardiography, Doppler vascular ultrasound. Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart. A natural electrical system causes the heart muscle to contract and pump the blood around the body. Electrical activity can be detected in the skin through some small metal discs, called electrodes. During ECG recording, the electrodes are attached to the skin at the chest, upper and lower limbs. Electrodes are connected to a device that transforms electrical impulses into a graphical representation in the form of a line, printed on paper, to be interpreted by the physician. Echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination of the heart. Using standard echographic techniques, two-dimensional images of the heart are obtained, and the latest techniques allow three-dimensional viewing of the heart. The Doppler technique also records various intracardiac haemodynamic parameters. Doppler echocardiography assesses blood flow and blood pressure in blood vessels, assesses heart valves, their functionality, abnormal communication between the right and left sides of the heart, calculates the heart rate. The effort testis an investigation used by cardiologists to assess cardiac function, especially in relation to physical effort. Narrow arteries provide less blood flow to the myocardium and thus less oxygen; during physical effort, the need for oxygen is increased, and the combination of these factors can cause symptoms and changes in ECG that suggest the existence of a coronary affection. Oscillometryis a test to assess the permeability of the main arterial trunks in the lower limbs in particular.
